The Future of Medicine will come through Mitochondria

Prof. Volkmar WeissigWe are excited to invite you to the 16th World Congress on Targeting Mitochondria, happening from October 22–24, 2025, in Berlin.

Organized by the World Mitochondria Society, this annual event brings together top experts in mitochondrial research and medicine to share new discoveries and ideas in mitochondrial therapy, gene treatment, and mitochondrial transplantation.

Cutaneous respirometry in healthy volunteers: a novel technique for monitoring mitochondrial function awarded by Targeting Mitochondria Scientific Committee

20131019- MG 9701Dr Floor Harms, from Department of Anesthesiology, Laboratory of Experimental Anesthesiology, Erasmus MC – University Medical Center Rotterdam, The Netherlands was awarded by Scientific Committee of Targeting Mitochondria 2013, for her researches about Cutaneous respirometry in healthy volunteers: a novel technique for monitoring mitochondrial function.

About the study:

The PpIX triplet state lifetime technique (PpIX-TSLT) has been proposed as a potential clinical non-invasive tool for monitoring mitochondrial function. In vivo mitochondrial respirometry allows measurement of mitochondrial oxygen tension (mitoPO2) and mitochondrial oxygen consumption (mitoVO2) in skin. The principle has been tested in experimental animals. Here we describe the first results of our new clinical prototype in a study in healthy human volunteers.
